Xunantunich (Maiden of the Rock)

Climbing “El Castillo” is a rewarding experience that offers visitors the enjoyment of with spectacular views of the hills and valleys surrounding Benque Viejo.

The first time I visited Benque Viejo I had to go to Xunantunich. The walk was exciting, strolling along the Mopan River to Succotz, crossing the ferry, and climbing up the hills towards the ruin. I enjoyed myself and the view was spectacular.

Benque Viejo Mayan Site

The Benque Viejo Mayan Site is located within the town and adjacent to some residents’ homes. It is said that this site was part of a larger suburb belonging to Xunantunich. Having a direct line-of-sight with Xunantunich, it is believed that it was the household of some elite families of the Xunantunich area.

Discover this Mayan Site, which had been a playground for many youths growing up. Who knows? It may become your favorite spot to read a book and watch the moon rise or the sunset.
